Falcon of the Week 2005-06

January 16-21, 2006

Men’s Basketball Team

The Falcon of the Week honor is awarded to entire men’s basketball team for their exceptional play at the UW-Marshfield Tournament over the weekend. The men’s team won their second tournament of the year, by winning the four team tournament held at UW-Marshfield January 20-21. The men played UW-Barron in their first round game on Friday night winning the game by a score of 62-47 with Andrew Payne scoring 16 points, Dan Spanbauer scoring 13 points, and Eric Schwartzmiller scoring 10 points in the game. In the championship game verse UW-Marshfield, the men won by a score of 77-71 with Dan Spanbauer pouring in 30 points and Rob Schaefer scoring 14 points in the game.

Two of the men were voted on to the all-tournament team (Rob Schaefer and Dan Spanbauer) for their exceptional play over the weekend in both games. Dan Spanbauer was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

Head coach Jason Collien stated “Our goal as a team was to win both tournaments we played in this season, and we accomplished our goal by winning both our home tournament and UW-Marshfield’s tournament. I am very impressed with the way the team is coming together as we close in on playoff games for the WCC & WJCAA tournaments."

The men’s team is currently (4-4) in conference and (12-7) overall. UW-Fond du Lac will play at home verse UW-Richland January 28. This will also be designated as Parent/Alumni recognition day.

January 9-13, 2006

Kara Putz

The Falcon of the Week honor is awarded to Kara Putz. Kara is a freshman 5’6” guard on the women’s basketball team from WLA located in Fond du Lac, WI.

Kara had 25 points and grabbed five rebounds vs UW-Marshfield on January 11 and made four key free throws down the stretch to secure a win over the number two team in the conference. The UW-Fond du Lac women won this game with a score of 57-53. Kara also, had 27 points and 8 rebounds in a losing effort to Western Wisconsin Technical College (WWTC), but it was her play that helped spark a come-back from ten down in the second half to tie it up and give us a chance to win.

Head coach Robert Wonser credits Kara “with building confidence as a freshman in her play and the team by making clutch shots down the stretch and working together as a team.”

UW-Fond du Lac will play at UW-Washington on Wednesday, January 18 for their next conference game. The women are currently (3-3) in conference play and (6-5) overall.

January 2-7, 2006

Dan Spanbauer

The Falcon of the Week honor is awarded to Dan Spanbauer. Dan is a 5’10” freshman guard on the men’s basketball team from Oshkosh West High School located in Oshkosh, WI.

In UW-Fond du Lac’s win verse UW-Marinette on Friday, January 6; Spanbauer poured in 28 points in the game, he shot very well from beyond the arc making 8 out of 11 attempts from 3-point land. Dan’s performance was also featured in an article by the Oshkosh Northwestern newspaper this week. The men won this game with a score of 75-67 which moved the men into second place with a (4-2) record in conference play and (9-5) record overall this season.

Head coach Jason Collien credits Dan Spanbauer “with playing extremely well for the entire 40 minutes of the game and also handling the ball very well throughout the game.

“Dan has been forced to step up as a freshmen point guard with starting guard Charlie Beau out with a broken fibula for 5 weeks.”

UW-Fond du Lac will play at home vs. UW-Marinette on Saturday, January, 14 in their next conference game.

December 12-17, 2005

Rob Schaefer

The Falcon of the Week honor is awarded to Rob Schaefer. Rob is a 6’6” freshman center on the men’s basketball team from Chilton High School located in Chilton, WI.

In UW-Fond du Lac’s win verse UW-Manitowoc on Monday of this week at home; Schaefer poured in 20 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. The men won this game with a score of 64-63 which moved the men into second place with a (3-2) record in conference play and (8-4) record overall this season.

Head coach Jason Collien credits Rob Schaefer, “with being a dominant force in the paint today and with our outside shooting struggling today this enabled us to eventually win the game.”

UW-Fond du Lac will play Waukesha Technical College on Wednesday, January, 4th after the holiday break for their first game of the second semester. The game at UW-Marinette has been moved to Friday, January 6th due to in climate weather on the 14th of December.

December 5-10, 2005

Kara Putz

The Falcon of the Week honor is awarded to Kara Putz. Kara is a freshman 5’6” guard on the women’s basketball team from WLA High School located in Fond du Lac, WI.

In UW-Fond du Lac’s two wins this week at UW-Richland on 12-5-05 and at home vs. UW-Marinette on 12-9-05; Kara had 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists at UW-Richland, and 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists vs. UW-Marinette respectively. The women’s team won their game at UW-Richland with a score of 61-74 and against UW-Marinette with a score of 61-59.

Head coach Robert Wonser credits Kara Putz “with being a freshman guard who is starting to come into her own who helped the team win 2 out of 3 games this week. She is also playing literally the whole game with sophomore starter Kendra Seidel out with a head injury from the first game of the week.”

UW-Fond du Lac will play UW-Manitowoc at home on Monday, December 12 for the last conference game of the semester. The women’s team is currently (3-5) overall and (2-2) in conference.

November 28-December 2, 2005

Eric Koenigs

The Falcon of the Week honor is awarded to Eric Koenigs this week. Eric is a 6’5” forward on the men’s basketball team from New Holstein, WI. This is the second time this year that Eric has received “Falcon of The Week” honors. He is also the captain of the team this season.

In UW-Fond du Lac’s game at UW Marshfield on Monday, November 28, Eric led the team to their 6th win of the season in their first seven games. UW-Fond du Lac won the game 91 to 83 over UW-Marshfield giving the men’s team a (6-1) record overall and they remain (2-1) in conference play. Eric led the team in scoring with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists in the game. This is Eric’s second double-double game in scoring and rebounds this season.

Head coach Jason Collien credits Eric Koenigs “with stepping up and making some clutch shots down the stretch.”

UW-Fond du Lac men’s will travel to UW-Richland for their next non-conference game on Monday, December 5.

November 21-25, 2005

Amanda Saeger-Frei

The Falcon of the Week honor is awarded to sophomore women’s basketball player Amanda Saeger-Frei this week. Amanda is a 5’9” forward on the women’s basketball team from Markesan High School in Markesan, WI.    

Amanda Saeger-Frei had 15 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 steals to lead the women’s basketball team to their first victory of the season over UW-Fox Valley. This is Amanda’s second double-double of the season.  The women’s team won this game with a score of 72-59; this was the first win overall for the women’s team and the first win in conference play. They are currently (1-2) overall and (1-1) in conference. 

Head coach Robert Wonser said “Amanda played her butt off and showed why she is not only a captain, but a true leader.”

UW-Fond du Lac women’s basketball will travel to UW-Marshfield on Monday, November 28 for their next game.

November 14-18, 2005

Andrew (Drew) Payne

The Falcon of the week honor is awarded to Andrew Payne this week. Andrew is a 6’1” guard on the men’s basketball team from IHM High School located in Illinois.

Andrew had 17 points and 19 rebounds in a UW-Fond du Lac’s game vs. UW-Washington. This was Andrew’s first double-double mark in the stats of the season. The men’s team won this game with a score of 82-79; this was a hard fought game from tip off to the ending buzzer. This game also marked UW-Fond du Lac’s first conference win of the season, after an impressive start to the season.

Head coach Jason Collien credits Andrew Payne “with playing with a very high level of intensity on both offense and defense."

UW-Fond du Lac men’s basketball will travel host UW-Fox Valley for their 3rd conference game of the year on November 21. The men are off to a fast start this season with a (2-1) conference record and (4-1) overall.

November 7-11, 2005

Charlie Beau

The Falcon of the week honor is awarded to Charlie Beau this week. Charlie is a 6’1” guard on the men’s basketball team from St. Mary Springs High School located in Fond du Lac, WI.

In UW-Fond du Lac’s home tournament held on November 11th & 12th with UW-Fond du Lac, UW-Marshfield, UW-Baraboo, and UW-Fox Valley competing, Charlie had 12 points & 8 rebounds in their first game vs. UW Baraboo which they won 91 to 73. Charlie then went on to have 18 points & 6 rebounds in the championship game vs. UW-Fox Valley, in which they also won by a score of 73 to 68. His average for the tournament was 15 points & 7 rebounds per game. This was the first year in many years that UW-Fond du Lac men’s basketball has won their home tournament.

Charlie also received all tournament honors, with both himself and Eric Koenigs being named to the all tournament team.

Head coach Jason Collien credits Charlie Beau, “with being a leader both on and off the court”.

UW-Fond du Lac men’s basketball will travel to UW-Sheboygan for their first conference game of the season.

October 31- November 5, 2005

Eric Koenigs

The Falcon of the Week honor is awarded to Eric Koenigs this week. Eric is a 6’5” forward on the men’s basketball team from New Holstein, WI. He is also the captain of the team this season.

In UW-Fond du Lac’s home opening game of the season vs. UW -Marathon on Saturday, November 5th Eric lead the team to their first win of the season. UW-Fond du Lac won 85 to 67 over UW-Marathon giving the men’s team a 1-0 record overall. Eric led the team in scoring with 22 points and also had 5 rebounds.

Head coach Jason Collien credits Eric Koenigs, “with working very hard both on and off the court and acting as a leader on the team this season.”

UW-Fond du Lac men’s basketball will compete at their home tournament next, which is held on Friday & Saturday (11-11/12-05) with UW-Fox Valley, UW-Marshfield, and UW-Baraboo. This should be a nice start to the season.

October 24-29, 2005

UW-Fond du Lac Volleyball Team

Falcon of the week honors are awarded to the entire women’s volleyball team for their achievements this entire season.

Members of the team from left to right (bottom) are: Angela Button, Justine Goodrich, Leah George, Keshia Kopf, (top-left) Lesile Steinbach, Jackie Koepke, Angela Goldberg, Missy Schell, Kristine Neubauer, and head coach Roger Duley.

The volleyball team finished a perfect 6-0 in conference play this season earning them a first place plaque for winning the eastern conference title. Leading the way were Jackie Koepke (Laconia), Lesile Steinbach (Mayville), and Leah George (Fond du Lac). Jackie Koepke was named to the First Team All-Conference and All-State Team, Lesile Steinbach was named to the Second Team All-Conference, and Leah George received Honorable Mention.

UW-Fond du Lac volleyball will compete at their last tournament of the year this weekend at UW-Rock County in Janesville, WI. This will be the WJCAA state conference tournament, the team will be ranked 2nd in their pool, GOOD LUCK LADIES!

October 17-22, 2005

Jackie Koepke

Jackie Koepke is a sophomore volleyball player for UW-Fond du Lac from Laconia, WI. Jackie plays the position of middle back on the team.

Jackie was on top of the stat sheet this season for both hitting percentage and number of blocks per game in both conference and on the team. During their regional championship games held at MATC (Milwaukee) on Wednesday, October 19, Jackie turned in a stellar performance. She ended the night with 43 kills, 24 blocks, 24 digs, and 6 serving aces; which in turn lead the team to win all 8 games that they played that night. The teams that UW-Fond du Lac defeated were UW-Washington, MATC, UW-Waukesha, and Waukesha Technical College. With the team finishing undefeated they will head into this weekend’s WJCAA tournament as a top seed.

Jackie also earned unanimous 1st team all-conference honors along with being named to the all-state volleyball team. She has performed consistently all season which helped the team to be ranked where they currently are in the state and conference.

UW-Fond du Lac volleyball will compete at their last tournament of the year this weekend at UW-Rock in Janesville, WI. This will be the WJCAA state conference tournament, the team will be ranked 2nd in their pool, GOOD LUCK LADIES!

 
October 10-15

Chad Bodden

Chad Bodden is a freshman golfer for UW-Fond du Lac from Lomira, WI.

Chad Bodden came alive this past weekend with his best score of the year (83) on the final round of the conference tournament held at Mascoutin Golf Club in Berlin, WI. Chad also shot (87) on the first day of the tournament. His combined score through two days of competition was 170 to lead the team. Through Chad’s efforts it helped UW--Fond du Lac’s golf team to finish in 4th place overall only 2 strokes out of 3rd place. At the conference tournament Chad earned 2nd team all-conference recognition with his performance.

Chad’s performance this weekend also earned him “Most Improved Player” recognition from his team. "Chad was the most consistent player keeping his scores within the tightest range all year,” quotes his coach Tom Clausen. Other members of the UW-Fond du Lac golf team included: Tyler Maas (Lomira) (86.4 average), Anthony Polakowski (86.6 average), Josh Pionke (Berlin), and Matt Cooley (Cambellsport) (88 average).

This concludes UW-Fond du Lac’s golf season. The team has had a very consistent season finishing typically in the 3rd-4th spot at most tournaments, highlighted by a 2nd place finish at their home invitational. Congratulations on a successful season!

October 3-8

Leah George

Leah George is a freshman volleyball player from Fond du Lac, WI. Leah plays the position of middle back on the volleyball team.

Leah George had 14 kills, 22 digs, 9 blocks, and was 37 for 38 serving with 2 aces in their two matches vs. UW-Fox Valley and UW-Richland. Leah’s outstanding efforts helped catapult UW-Fond du Lac to win both matches in the week. UW-Fond du Lac won in 3 games vs. UW-Fox Valley and in 4 games vs. UW-Richland. This improves their record to 8-3 overall and they remain unbeaten in conference at a 5-0 record.

“Leah has been a very consistent player all season.” She has been the dig and serving leader all season. “She is a good all around player,” credits her coach Roger Duley.

UW-Fond du Lac’s volleyball team will be at home on Monday, October 10 vs. Waukesha Tech. at 7:00 p.m., this will also be parent/staff recognition night. The volleyball team will also travel to UW-Manitowoc on Wednesday, October 12th for their last conference game of the season.

September 26-October 1

Matt Cooley

Matt Cooley is a freshman golfer from Campbellsport, WI.

Matt Cooley led the UW-Fond du Lac golf team to a second place finish at their home invitational held on Thursday, September 29 at Rolling Meadows Golf Course. Matt shot a total of 76 through 18 holes, he was out in a 35 score and came back in with a 41 score. Matt’s total score of 76 earned him a 3rd place individual plaque overall. UW-Fond du Lac finished second only to MATC (Madison) who is typically a powerhouse in golf each year. The Falcons were the top conference team at the six team invitational.

"Our team played exceptionally well.” “Madison Area Technical College always has a stellar team, so for us to come in 2nd is like winning the invitational in my book”, states head coach Tom Clausen.

UW-Fond du Lac golf is away at UW Sheboygan next week playing at the “BULL” on Wednesday, October 5.

September 19-24

Ben Elliot

Ben Elliot is a freshman soccer player from Waupun, WI. Ben plays at the sweeper position on the team.

Ben Elliot had a key goal with two seconds left in regulation vs. MATC (Milwaukee) to force over time at a 4-4 tie. UW-Fond du Lac ended up winning the game five minutes into overtime on a Jeff Mischo goal to give the Falcons their first win of the season. Later in that same week Ben went on to have a “hat trick” vs. UW Marathon scoring all of UW-Fond du Lac’s goals (3-2) giving the Falcons their second win of the season and their first conference win of the season. UW-Fond du Lac’s current record is (2-8-1) overall and (1-5) in conference.

Ben typically plays the position of striker, however this season to help out the team he has moved to the defensive position of sweeper. “Ben plays hard every second of every minute in every game”, credits his coach Craig Larson.

UW-Fond du Lac soccer is away next week at UW-Richland. UW-Fond du Lac’s next home soccer game will be Thursday, October 13th @ 8:00 p.m. vs. MATC (Madison); this is also Parent/Staff recognition night.

September 12-17

Keshia Kopf

Keshia Kopf is a freshman volleyball player from Oakfield, WI. Keshia’s plays an outside hitter position on the team.

Keshia had 10 kills, 19 digs, and was 22 for 24 for serving with 2 aces, vs. UW Waukesha on September 14th. This was a big win for the volleyball team beating last year’s conference champion. This is also the volleyball team’s first conference win of the season moving them to 1-0 in conference play.

Her coach Roger Duley says, “She is a team player and she gives a 110% when on the court.”

UW-Fond du Lac volleyball is home next week for a four game home stand vs. UW-Marinette, UW-Marathon, UW-Rock, and UW-Washington County. These are all conference games.

  September 5 – 10

Leslie Steinbach

Leslie is the first student-athlete of this year to receive “Falcon of The Week” honors. Leslie is a freshman on the UW-Fond du Lac volleyball team from Mayville, WI.  She led the way with 23 assists in their first conference game vs. UW-Baraboo. The scores from the match were: 30-27, 30-10, and 30-21 giving UW-Fond du Lac their first win of the season.

Leslie’s coach, Roger Duley, also states that “she came in as a freshman as an outside hitter, but she took on the setter role." She had 23 assists and had a setting percentage of 91. “For a freshman playing a new position she showed great leadership.”
