UW-Fond du Lac to host national film festival on April 6

Posted 3-14-11 -The 30th Black Maria Film & Video Festival 2011 annual tour will make a stop on April 6 at UW-Fond du Lac’s Prairie Theater, 400 University Dr.
Admission is free with student films beginning at 6 p.m. and the festival films beginning at 6:30 pm. UW-Fond du Lac is the only Wisconsin venue on this year’s tour and the evening will include selected films from the more than 50 films in the 2011 Black Maria collection.
This festival celebrates independent, experimental and cutting-edge short films and is known for its national public exhibition program which tours across the United States at more than 60 universities, libraries, museums and other community organizations annually.
UW-Fond du Lac Dean and CEO John Short has seen the Black Maria Film Festival at his former university in Pennsylvania where it played to standing room only audiences.
“The films that are featured in this series are often bold, provocative and ground-breaking,” said Short. “They stretch our imaginations while causing amazement as we consider ordinary facets of life within truly extraordinary contexts.”
Short adds that these are not traditional entertainment films. The films include animation, documentary and experimental films.
“You may find some of the films to be bewildering, but others may leave you with an entirely new perspective on the way that you look at the world,” he said. “The creativity of the film-makers, however, will be something that viewers do not easily forget.”
This festival is an important example of UW-Fond du Lac’s Creative Campus philosophy where creativity is encouraged in all of its forms.
Louis Libitz, assistant director and program coordinator of the Black Maria Film Festival, will introduce the films and will be available for comments and discussion. The local coordinator is Richard Klein, communication and film studies instructor at UW-Fond du Lac.
Black Maria Film Festival is named after the first motion picture studio designed and built by Thomas Edison in 1893 in West Orange, New Jersey. It was named for its resemblance to police paddy wagons of the era which were called Black Marias.
Students interested in submitting an entry to be considered for the student portion of this film festival should contact Klein at richard.klein@uwc.edu. Spots are limited and there will be a juried selection process.
The film festival is sponsored by UW-Fond du Lac Student Life and Interest Committee and Fine Arts and Lecture Committee. The films presented may not be suitable for all ages.
