Berliner
Cappella choral ensemble from Germany to
perform at UW-Fond du Lac on Oct. 23
Posted 9/29/09.—A 55-voice choral ensemble
from Germany,
Berliner Cappella, will present a concert at
7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 at UW-Fond du Lac
in the University Center Commons, 400 University
Dr., Fond du Lac.
Berliner Cappella is a mixed choir of
non-professional singers that has been a part of
the musical life on Berlin for more than four
decades. The choir performs regularly in large
churches and major concert halls of Berlin
including the Philharmonie and the Konzerthaus
at the Gendarmenmarkt. This performance is one
of three Midwest concerts on their U.S. tour
this fall.
The musical director and conductor of
Berliner Cappella is Kerstin Behnke who presents
unique contemporary music with other unknown
music especially by female composers. The
American touring program will include pieces by
Brahms, Mendelssohn and Kodaly and female
composers Clara Schumann, Julia Deppert and
Fanny Hensel.
Soloist Burkhardt von Puttkamer, baritone,
accompanied by Szusza Balint will perform music
by Robert Schumann and Ethel Smyth.
The
Fond du Lac Chamber Singers under the
direction of
Patricia Eby, UW-Fond du Lac associate dean
and music professor, will sing a short
pre-concert program beginning at 7:15 p.m.
Selections will include English madrigals,
American spirituals and three pieces from "Hymn
of Praise" by Mendelssohn with soloists Paul
Thompson, tenor, and Michelle O'Brian, soprano,
accompanied by Melissa Martiros.
Tickets are $12 adults, $6 students, UW-Fond
du Lac students free with ID. Purchase tickets
