Higher ed institutions in
Fond du Lac County host joint leadership
summit for students on Oct. 7
Posted 9-21-09—In the first collaboration of
its kind, the four institutions of higher
education in Fond du Lac County
will jointly
sponsor a free
Student
Leadership Summit on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at
the UW-Fond du Lac campus, 400 University Dr.,
Fond du Lac.
Students from
Marian University,
Moraine Park
Technical College,
Ripon College and UW-Fond du
Lac are invited to participate in this
conference featuring regional and state-wide
experts on the topics of diversity and
leadership. There is no fee for the conference,
but registration is required for the break-out
sessions and the lunch.
The Student Leadership Summit keynote speaker
is Jamie Washington, a nationally known speaker,
consultant and trainer with more than 25 years
of experience in education presenting “Leading
on Diversity in the Twenty-First Century.”
The breakout sessions available during the
day include Conversations among Religions; LGBTQ
Issues; Framework for Understanding Poverty;
Everyday Democracy: How to Start Discussion on
Your Campus; Does Color Matter? A Look at the
Mirror of Privilege; and College Challenge
Course: Team Building Challenges.
Entertainment during the lunch break will
feature an interactive presentation on the
history of dance from around the world by Julie
Wilson of Shut Up and Dance.
Representatives of the four institutions will
welcome attendees in the morning and establish
the framework for future activities to promote
diversity in Fond du Lac County. The summit will
end with a student panel/poster presentation and
reflection on planning the next steps.
This event is being coordinated by the Higher
Education Diversity Initiative Task Force (HEDIT)
which was created by the presidents and deans of
the four institutions. The task force was
charged to lead, inspire, educate and challenge
their respective institutions and the greater
Fond du Lac County community in promoting
diversity and inclusiveness. Taskforce members
include faculty, students, staff and
administrators in equal numbers from each of the
four institutions.
