An ACT Preparation course will be offered this spring at the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac. The ACT exam is an important component of the college admissions review process. This course is open to all students who will be taking the ACT exam this spring whether they will attend UW-Fond du Lac or a college elsewhere.
Two sessions will be offered. The first session in March will run 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Mar. 3; 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 10; 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 13 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 15. This session will end two weeks prior to the April ACT test.
The second ACT Preparation session will be offered 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 5; 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12; 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 17. This session will end two weeks prior to the June ACT test.
The sessions will be taught by faculty from the UW Colleges. At the first class meeting of each session, students will take a diagnostic test to identify areas of both strength and need. The second and third class meetings will include a review of the pretest results, English, reading, writing, math and science. The last class meeting will include a mini-test, wrap-up and questions.
To receive the full benefit of this course it is important that participants attend all class meetings. It is also important to note that registering for an ACT Preparation course does not register students for the ACT test.
The ACT preparation series is designed to address two potential barriers to good test performance by test-takers.
“Students who take the ACT exam are well aware of its importance as a component of the college admissions review process,” said Linda Reiss, UW-Fond du Lac assistant campus dean for student services. “That knowledge can create anxiety. Actually, most tests create some anxiety. The ACT prep program addresses that anxiety by providing practice and some familiarity with the test experience, setting and format.”
Reiss adds that the ACT test assesses what the student has learned and the academic skills developed.
“The ACT prep program helps students to ‘polish’ those skills, to bring forward their competence prior to the test, providing a test performance result more indicative of the student’s actual knowledge and college readiness,” said Reiss.
The fee for either the March or May session is $129 and includes the 532-page study guide “Cracking the ACT,” administration of the pre-test complete with results, and all instruction.
Early registration is recommended due to limited space. To register or for more information call (920) 929-3622 or sign up and pay online at www.fdl.uwc.edu/cont_ed
