UW-Fond du Lac annual Holiday Concert set for Dec. 23

UW-Fond du Lac’s annual Holiday Concert “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23 in the University Center Commons, 400 University Drive.

The evening will feature the Fond du Lac Chamber Singers, UW-Fond du Lac Chorus and the vocal jazz ensemble U-FiDeLity under the direction of Patricia Eby, UW-Fond du Lac music professor.

The theme “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” was chosen by Eby to incorporate UW-Fond du Lac’s year-long campus-wide theme of “War at the Personal Level” into this holiday performance event.

The UW-Fond du Lac performance ensembles will be joined in the concert by family and friends for a true feeling of being “home.”

“The idea of being home for Christmas originated in World War II, when soldiers at first thought that the war would be quick and they would return by Christmas time.” said Eby. “This inevitably did not happen, hence the line ‘if only in my dreams’ in the song.”

Eby explained that in 1943, the song “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” joined "White Christmas” to become one of America's most popular Christmas songs.

In addition to the theme song, other selections will include Christmas songs by Irving Berlin,  John Rutter and Amy Grant;  jazz renditions of  “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” and” ‘Zat you, Santa Claus?,”  the popular “Jingle Bell Rock”  as well as music by Sweelinck and Hassler.  Following the Chamber Singers rendition of “Caroling, Caroling” by Alfred Burt, the audience will be invited to sing along to traditional carols.

Concert admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students. UW-Fond du Lac students are admitted free with current ID. Tickets can be purchased in advance by phone at (920) 929-1111 or at the door.
