UW-Fond du Lac Theater Department presents the Pulitzer award winning play “Proof” Nov. 7-11
Fond du Lac, Wis.The University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac Theater Department will present the Pulitzer award winning play "Proof" by David Auburn in the Prairie Theater, 400 University Dr. The show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7-10. Matinees will be presented at 2:00 p.m. Nov. 10 and 11.
The story centers around 25-year-old Catherine who spent years caring for her brilliant, but unstable father, a famous mathematician. She must attempt to resolve familial conflicts and romantic entanglements, as well as make a personal calculation which may have no answer. How much of her father's madness or genius will she inherit?
Director Richard Gustin, UW-Fond du Lac theater and communication arts professor says that Auburn gives an intimate view of what it is like to care for an ailing parent in this play.
“It’s a fact of life that we can all relate to,” said Gustin. “The play is a detective story, wonderfully funny and serious, dealing with issues of family life, romance and the academic world.
“The struggle between Robert and his two daughters is palpable. The play is oriented to college students and the ‘big life’ questions they deal with.”
Gustin adds that this is a wonderful opportunity for UW-Fond du Lac students and the community to experience one of the best written plays he has ever had the pleasure to work on.
“Audiences will find the play dynamic and challenging,” said Gustin. “After all, isn’t that the reason we go to the theater - to experience our lives more deeply and to reflect upon them?”
A Fond du Lac premiere, "Proof" was winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play.
UW-Fond du Lac students in the production include Kaitlin Malwitz as Catherine with Eva Thelen as understudy. Joey Kunde is playing Claire with Carly Lewandowski as understudy. Matt Maier is playing Hal with Paul Wagner as understudy.
