About the event
Prairie Fest is a fun, family-centered event to celebrate the Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum and our native plants heritage. This is a great way to spend your Saturday -- lots to learn and lots to do! The event is FREE, and open to the general public. Bring your own picnic and lawn chairs or blankets.

10:00 Yoga on the Prairie—Start off a relaxing Prairie Fest with yoga. Group leaves from the run/walk breakfast table.

10:00 Prairie Tour—Learn about the Arboretum and the many native wildflowers and grasses re-established here. (Tour leaves from the picnic shelter)

10:00 The Attentive Eye: Keeping a Nature Journal—Why keep a nature journal? What might it be like? In this workshop, we’ll consider these questions. Bring a notebook and pencil or pen. For high school-adult.

10:30 Birds of Prey—Barb Harvey introduces her live raptor friends. (Indoors, Room UC 113-114)

11:00 Mammals of Wisconsin—Real animal skins to touch and look at with Bill Volkert of the DNR. (Programs Tent)

11:00 Arboretum/Display Garden Tour Learn about the trees and shrubs in the formal arboretum. View the display garden at the entrance to the UW, and learn about a new garden. (Tour leaves from the picnic shelter)

11:30 Who lives in Prairie Pond? Walk on over to the pond and discover aquatic insects. (Leaves from picnic shelter)

12:00 Beekeeping 101 with Denise Palkovich. Learn the basics of backyard beekeeping. (Indoors, room UC 113-114)

12:00 Prairie Wildflower hike—Learn about the Arboretum and the many native wildflowers and grasses re-established here. (Tour leaves from the picnic shelter)

12: 30 Energy Solutions for Today and Tomorrow
Learn about how to save energy in the home and how to get started with renewable energy systems. (Programs Tent.)

1:00 Unique Insects of the Prairie
Learn about bugs that make the prairie buzz and hum with Phil Pellitteri, entomologist with UW Extension. (Indoors, UC 113-114)

1:00 Detective Journaling: Seeing the Invisible Look for the secrets of nature hidden in plants! Bring paper, pen or pencil, markers or crayons. For children grades 4-6.

1:30 Prairie Trails Tour—Learn about the three trails available for running and walking. You’ll also learn about the prairie and formal arboretum. (Tour leaves from the picnic shelter)

2:00 Saving Water for a Blue Planet
Learn about water conservation products that can help you reduce household water consumption without sacrificing your quality of life. (Programs Tent)

2:00 Discovery Tour for Kids Join Ron Zahringer from Ledge View Nature Center on a voyage of discovery through the prairie. Learn about plants, animals and the prairie habitat. (Tour leaves from the picnic shelter)

Ongoing/All Day

Some of our activities are indoors. Follow the signs to locations inside the UW. Unless otherwise mentioned, all activities are outdoors near the east parking lot.

Cheyenne Tipi—learn about Native American customs and storytelling

Alternative Energy—Learn how you can save energy from a variety of businesses and non profit organizations.

Kite flying and building—Kite making and flying early in the day; kits for sale later.

FdL County Audubon Society—Bird information, nature magazine exchange, and free drawings.

Cooking with Natural Foods-Vicky White of Mom’s Market teaches you how to make cool cool foods for the hot hot summer!

Creative Designs with Prairie Flowers—Patrick Creed, AIFD, of Botanicals Floral Studio shows you how to create stunning floral arrangements with native flowers.

Reptiles and Amphibians of WI—Visit with live turtles, snakes, and frogs.

Atlatl—demonstrations and contest. Try out a stone-age spear thrower.

Fond du Lac Co. Historical Society—History comes alive with hands on activities and books. (Indoors)

Fond du Lac Humane Society—Adopt and Shop at Prairie Fest.

Wild Ones—Find out more about native plants with information from this local club.

Sustain Dane Rain Barrels—Learn how to save water and help the environment at the same time.

Plus—a bevy of other non-profit organizations and groups—some indoors, some out!

Activities for Children

Unless otherwise mentioned, activities are located in the Children’s Area tents.

10:00 Old Shoe Planters—Create your own flower planter to take home.

Prairie Garden Hats—Make your own paper hat with all the trimmings. Ongoing. (Indoors)

Face Painting—Betty Trent paints flowers, insects and animals. Ongoing.

Leaf Print T-shirts—decorate a T-shirt, bandana or piece of paper with a prairie leaf print. Ongoing.

Pine Cone Bird Feeder—Make a bird feeder for your feathered friends. Ongoing.

Prairie Fest Welcomes David Drake!

1:45-12:30
and 1:15-2:00

Folksinger and songsmith David Drake will present his “Wiscon-Sing Festival Program.” This is a musical portrait of the state that introduces songs from the original inhabitants through the European immigration up to our present day farmers and Great Lakes sailors. David was named the “2002 Folk Music Artist of the Year” and “2001 Family Music Artist of the Year” by the Wisconsin area Music Industry (WAMI Award).
