Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Process: A Summary

Step #1: The student and family (if applicable)

  • Complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online or a paper copy of the FAFSA may also be completed and mailed.
  • Review the Student Aid Report (SAR), a summary of the information provided on the FAFSA, received by mail approximately 2-4 weeks later.
  • Verify the information on the SAR and verify that the school the student intends to attend is listed on the SAR.

Step #2: The college receives an electronic version of the SAR .

  • Calculates the student's eligibility
        budget (cost to attend?)
    –  expected family contribution
    =  need
Sends 2 copies of an award letter offering grants, loans, work-study to meet the calculated need.

Step #3: The student

  • Accepts or declines the aid and submits one signed copy of the financial aid award letter to the Financial Aid Office (retains the other copy for personal records). Note: The signed award letter must be submitted to the FA Office to receive any grants, loans, or student work opportunities)

Step #4: The college

  • Disburses the financial aid on the basis on the number of credits the student is carrying at the end of the 6th day of class(es).
  • Credits any federal grants will automatically to the student account. Any remaining funds will be issued as a change check made out to the student.
  • Requires payment of any remaining balance due by the end of the 10th day of class(es).

Q. What if my aid is not enough to cover the full tuition?
A. See the Business Office to either pay the balance or apply for the partial payment plan.

Q. What if I applied late and I have not received an award letter?
A. See the Business Office and either pay the tuition or sign up for the partial payment plan.

Q. If I accept work-study am I issued a check for that amount?
A. No, you work for a department, submit a timesheet every two weeks, and receive a paycheck for the hours worked.

Q. How many credits do I need to carry to receive financial aid?
A. A Pell Grant Award is based on full-time (12 or more credits) but is prorated if less than full-time. Eligibility for other grants, loans and work-study is based on at least half time enrollment, or 6 or more credits.

A. No, you must sign for your own check(s) in the Financial Aid Office.
