Counselor's Update

Youth Options

The last day we will accept new Youth Options enrollments for spring will be Friday, December 7.  A University of Wisconsin application, high school transcripts, and a completed DPI form are all that are needed.  We no longer need the UW-Fond du Lac specific form that had been used in recent years.

An Orientation and Registration session will be held on Wednesday December 12, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm for new Youth Options students taking courses this spring.  Further information regarding the Orientation & Registration session is mailed to each student as they are admitted.

We have received all the necessary paperwork from all of the continuing Youth Options students.  Returning Youth Options students have the opportunity to register as continuing students beginning Monday, November 19, 2007 via their PRISM account.  If they would like to meet with a UW-Fond du Lac Academic Advisor, please have them contact Student Services at 920-929-3606.

Students Previewed Campus

We had a great response at the recent Campus Preview with approximately 145 high school students and their guests in attendance!

Students met current faculty, staff, and students while touring the campus.  Information on admissions, scholarships and financial aid was also presented.  Thank you for encouraging students to visit campus!

New! Tours Offered Every Week

If you know of students who were unable to attend Campus Preview but would like to tour the campus we now have regularly scheduled tours are offered every week!  Of course individual tours are also available by calling the Student Services Office at (920) 929-3606.

High School Visits

Thank you for the warm welcome I received as I made my first visits to a number of the area high schools in October!  I am willing to give presentations to individual classes or at school assemblies as well as attending special events.  If you would like to request a visit to your school please feel free to contact me at (920) 929-3609.

Study Finds Dual Enrollment Leads to College Success

According to a recent article in "The Chronicle of Higher Education," students who take college courses while in high school are more likely than their peers to graduate, to go on to college, and to do well in college.  Once in college, former dual-enrollment students were likelier to stay enrolled and to have significantly higher grade-point averages, even after two years in college.

The courses appear to be especially beneficial for male students, students from low-income families, and those who struggled academically in high school, according to a report on the study, "The Postsecondary Achievement of Participants in Dual Enrollment: An Analysis of Student Outcomes in Two States."

ACT Exam Prep Course Has Good Reviews

The ACT Preparation course that is being offered this fall has had good reviews from recent participants. When asked “What did you like best about this course?” this is what participants said…

  • “Finding out how to take the test and take it with confidence.”
  • “I liked every bit of information on the ACT.”
  • “Learning new ways of studying “boning up” for the test and getting more confidence in myself.”
  • “It helped me know what to expect. And by taking the test two times in this class, I know what is on each category and I am more relaxed.”
  • “The thing I like best about this course was teaching me better study skills.”
  • “It gave me helpful hints as how I should answer questions or how I should look at them.”
  • “The detailing and explanations of various test taking skills that are not taught in the classroom.”
  • “That it gave me a good background of the ACT and materials and what to study.”
  • “I learned a lot of studying strategies.”
  • “Being able to learn different techniques that I can apply later.”

The sessions are taught by faculty from the UW Colleges and are open to all students who will be taking the ACT exam this spring whether they will attend UW-Fond du Lac or a college elsewhere.

The Continuing Education Office at UW-Fond du Lac offers scholarships to economically disadvantaged youth for ACT Prep.  Scholarship participants will receive either a 100% scholarship (free) or 75% scholarship (reduced).  A copy of the participant's free/reduced lunch program letter from their high school district is needed to be eligible.

University of Wisconsin Institutions: Areas of Excellence

At our lunch for high school counselors last month a question arose as to how to appropriately direct your students to the best UW baccalaureate university for the specific career of their choice.

We would like to emphasize that a very good bachelor’s degree can be earned in any field offered by each university. But each of our four-year institutions has become known for particular areas of excellence. What follows is a basic chart to be used in conjunction with the UW Help publication on the University of Wisconsin System WWW.UWHELP.WISCONSIN.EDU.

An array of international flags can be seen in the UW-Fond du Lac University Center Commons thanks to the efforts of the Multicultural Club at the campus. The display honors the diverse heritage of UW-Fond du Lac students, alumni, staff and faculty and represents international neighbors and a cross section of the globe.

The club used a portion of its budget over a three year period to purchase the flags.

Shown below the flag display are members of the Multicultural Club. Front row: Logan Shine. Second row, left to right: Gagandeep Kaur, Mai Yeng Xiong, Professor Paisley Harris, Jessica Wilke, Amber Whelan. Third Row: Erika Freiberg, Jaimie Lemieux, Teale Greylord, Lellia Bavers, Ramon Rios, Deanna Backhaus. Fourth Row: Tom Reich, Jason Tetzlaff, Robert Lange, UW-Fond du Lac Dean Daniel Blankenship, Travis Krueger, Le Suong Cina.
