Counselor's Update

ACT Exam Preparation Course Offered

An ACT Preparation course is being offered again this fall and winter at the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac. This course is open to all students who will be taking the ACT exam this spring whether they will attend UW-Fond du Lac or a college elsewhere.

The sessions are taught by faculty from the UW Colleges. At the first class meeting of each session, students will take a diagnostic test to identify areas of both strength and need. The second and third class meetings will include a review of the pretest results, English, reading, writing, math and science. The last class meeting will include a mini-test, wrap-up and questions.

To receive the full benefit of this course it is important that participants attend all class meetings. It is also important to note that registering for an ACT Preparation course does not register students for the ACT test.

The fee for the session is $149 and includes the 532-page study guide “Cracking the ACT,” administration of the pre-test complete with results, and all instruction. Early registration is recommended due to limited space. To register or for more information call (920) 929-1155 or sign up and pay online at http://www.fdl.uwc.edu/ce/youth.html

Continuing Education at UW-Fond du Lac offers scholarships to economically disadvantaged youth for ACT Prep. Scholarship participants will receive either a 100% scholarship (free) or 75% scholarship (reduced). A copy of the participant's free/reduced lunch program letter from their high school district is needed to be eligible.

Experience China with the University of Wisconsin Colleges

High School Juniors and Seniors can jumpstart their College Education by earning four fully transferable University of Wisconsin Colleges credits in Chinese.
This five-week program is open to Mandarin language learners of all levels, including beginners. The program is designed to give high school students a stimulating and exciting college study abroad experience.

Students will live with a Chinese family and be placed in morning classes appropriate to your level. There will be an opportunity to participate in cultural workshops such as Wushu, Chinese watercolor painting and other activities in the afternoons. Weekends will offer excursions to areas of interest, including a remote mountain village.

The program also includes touring to Beijing and Xian. For more details visit: http://www.uwc.edu/academics/abroad/china/

Students Previewed Campus

We had a nice response at this fall’s Campus Preview with approximately 90 high school students and their guests in attendance! Students met current faculty, staff, and students, toured the campus, and received information on admissions, scholarships and financial aid.

If you know of students who were unable to attend Campus Preview but would like to tour the campus we have regularly scheduled tours are offered every week! Check out the schedule at http://www.fdl.uwc.edu/campus_visits.html

Individual tours are also available by calling the Student Services Office at (920) 929-1122.

Scholarships for 2009-2010 Academic Year

New Students Admitted for Spring 2009

Students that have been admitted for spring 2009 have had information mailed to them about upcoming Placement Test dates and Orientation and Registration programs. Any students wishing to take a math or English course must take a placement test to determine which course they are eligible to take. You can help by encouraging students who have been admitted to take their placement tests early. See the dates and further information on Placement Tests at: http://www.fdl.uwc.edu/admissions/placement_testing.html

Social Security Numbers Are Important on College Applications

Students are becoming increasingly aware of how important it is to not give out their Social Security Number (SSN). While a student is not legally required to provide their SSN when applying for admission to the University on the application they are strongly encouraged to do so as it aids in a number of ways.

Federal law allows the University to request and use a students’ SSN for routine record keeping, institutional statistics and research, and compliance with Federal and State reporting requirements.

Although providing the SSN is not required for admission to the University, it is required for financial aid and ensures that you will be able to claim the new educational tax benefits, if eligible, on your federal tax return. The University may use the SSN for billing and collection efforts, financial aid, internal verification and administrative purposes.
